Rentschler Biopharma was represented at two European Biotech conferences in September. Dr. Stefan Schmidt, CSO, attended the BioTalk in Berlin on September 25, 2017. The conference focusing on Biological Manufacturing Excellence gathered more than 200 senior international delegates. Dr. Schmidt participated in the open panel discussion "Smart Technologies - The next generation Smart biomanufacturing facility." An important question addressed during this discussion was, how the dramatic increase in yields or the increasing popularity of single-use technologies will influence bioprocessing facilities and process designs in the future.

The main part of the discussion focused on the impact of information technology on bioprocessing, both in terms of automation and analytics. The lively dialogue included issues such as which parameters should be monitored, how development and production can be connected, and how artificial intelligence or machine learning contribute to manufacturing performance.

On September 26, 2017 Dr. Schmidt gave a lecture at the ISPE Conference on Biotechnology 2017 in Dublin, Ireland - a symposium with more than 250 participants. He presented new trends in the development of fusion proteins - artificial proteins that emerge from a combination of two or more genes coding for separate proteins.

Fusion proteins have significant advantages compared to the original versions, such as a proven therapeutic concept and an improved application. Their number in the pipelines and on the market is steadily increasing, however, they are difficult to manufacture and a platform process rarely exists.
